With only a matter of weeks to go until Easter, the shops are full of tempting chocolate treats, simnel cake, hot cross buns, juicy joints of lamb and a multitude of other mouth-watering morsels, to see you through the bank holiday and beyond.

Easter, much like Christmas, has become synonymous with feasting. And after the past couple of years, why not?  Most of us are keen to hold on tight to any occasion which means hanging out with friends and family to enjoy great food and each other’s company. Even better if there’s a mountain of chocolate to tuck into while you’re catching up.

But why we eat eggs at Easter is a whole other matter. Eggs have long been considered (for obvious reasons) to symbolise new life. Which is what Easter and Spring are all about. Back in the day, eggs were originally given as gifts to celebrate the new season, and the tradition has evolved over time, moving gradually away from the product of a hen, to the product of Cadbury’s.

In the UK alone, we gift and gorge on around 80 million chocolate eggs each Easter. And alarmingly, most children receive eight eggs on average! But for those wanting to mark the occasion without milk chocolate, there are plenty of healthy alternatives to the traditional Easter egg.
