As the weather begins to warm up, the birds start to sing again and new life peeps through in nature, it’s time to harness the spring in your step (pardon the pun!).

There’s more daylight as the clocks go forward, and the brighter weeks trigger a serotonin boost which more often than not comes hand in hand with an increase in energy and enthusiasm.

So, whether exercise has figured much in your daily life or not during the winter, now’s a great time to get your body moving and make the most of your new season mojo.

Setting yourself a spring fitness challenge may be just the thing to spur you on.

Did you know that in as little as 30 days you can program a new behaviour so that it becomes routine? That means committing to achieve a goal you set now could lead to whole new lifestyle and a fitter, healthier you for the long-term.

There’s no need to sign up for a marathon (though do, if you’re up for it!) or set off to swim the channel (likewise!). Coming up with a spring fitness challenge is all about pushing yourself – whatever that looks like for you and your circumstances. There’s no right or wrongs here – just aim to move more.

The NHS suggests that ‘adults should do some type of physical activity everyday’ amounting to at least 150 minutes across the week. That’s roughly 20 minutes of movement per day.

Can you challenge yourself to do that?

Here’s how to make it simple…

Decide on your personal Spring Fitness Challenge

Write it down. Make it clear in your head. And timetable the steps you’re going to take to achieve it.

Date it

Mark on your calendar the date your challenge starts and ends. Tick off the days as they go and be sure to pat yourself hard on the back as each one passes.

Do it daily

The easiest way to form a habit and stick to your goals is by doing it daily. Remember, just 20 minutes of exercise can reduce your risk of illness and help you feel fitter in no time.

Be consistent

Whatever your fitness challenge may be, try doing it at the same time each day. Over time, your subconscious will pick up on environmental cues and trigger the desire to get moving for you. Clever, right?

Keep it clear

Keep reminding yourself of the reasons behind taking the challenge and more importantly, the benefits they’ll bring.

Crack on!

No matter how big or how small the challenge, it starts with the first step. So set yourself up for success by following the five tips above, remember you can do this and get going!
