One of the biggest barriers to getting fit (apart from time and willingness, of course!) is cost but we are here to tell you that you can get, and stay, fit for free! From exercising at home to turning everyday activities into a workout, here are our top 5 tips for getting fit without paying a penny.

HOME WORKOUTS

Home workouts became the big fitness trend of lockdown with every household in the country tuning into Joe Wicks at some point. There is no reason not to continue this trend given that it keeps you dry, warm and saves the pennies! There are many ways to exercise at home, including online fitness videos, dancing, marching or running on the spot or do exercises such as push-ups, squats or lunges. Why not get other family members involved and set up some healthy habits for you all to keep to?

GARDENING

As we move into Spring, it will soon be time to get out in the garden and gardening is a great way to exercise for free. The NHS states that activities like digging and shovelling can raise your heart rate and make you sweat. Moreover, pushing a lawnmower counts towards the recommended 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity for adults. How good is that?

SKIP

Did you know that just a few minutes of skipping every day brings a range of health benefits, including heart and lung fitness, strong bones, balance and flexibility? If you do it to music it can also be great fun! The average person can burn up to 200 calories by skipping for 15 minutes, making it a brilliant way to both improve and maintain your fitness for free.

CLIMB THE STAIRS

Stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging and it counts towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. We recommend going up and down stairs at home as much as possible and taking stairs – climb a flight, go back down and then repeat. Gradually build up the number of times you go up and down the stairs. When you are out and about, instead of opting for the lift or escalator, take the stairs because every little helps!

WALK

Walking is a brilliant way to get fit and stay fit. Can you opt to walk to work for example? Walking as much as possible in your daily life can help burn more energy than going to the gym regularly. Walking is also a great way to see more of where you live, to experience more of the countryside around you and it can be a really sociable way to exercise as well.
